Products or Modifiers Missing

How to fix missing items, variations, or modifiers in your Layout app by adjusting Square catalog setup.

Updated over 2 months ago

If products, variations, or modifiers are missing in your Layout app, the cause is almost always related to how the catalog is configured in Square. Layout displays exactly what Square provides, so even small configuration details can affect what appears in the app.

The first thing to check is whether the item is assigned to a category in Square. Items that are not placed into a category may not appear in the app or may be difficult for customers to find. Organizing items into clear, logical categories in Square improves visibility and makes the app easier to use.

Next, confirm that the item is enabled for the correct location. In Square, items can be active for some locations and disabled for others. If an item is not enabled for a specific location, it will not appear in the app for that location, even if it exists in your catalog.

Modifiers are another common source of missing data. For a modifier to appear in the app, it must be attached to an item in Square and enabled for online ordering. Modifiers that exist in Square but are not linked to items will not display. Additionally, modifier groups should be reviewed to ensure required and optional selections are set correctly.

Variations such as sizes must also be configured properly. If size options are missing, check that variations are created as part of the item rather than separate items. Proper variation setup ensures customers can select sizes or versions within a single product instead of seeing duplicates.

Availability settings can also affect visibility. If an item is marked as unavailable, sold out, or scheduled for limited hours in Square, it may not appear in the app depending on the current time and location settings.

After making any changes in Square, trigger a manual sync from the Layout dashboard to refresh the data. Manual syncing ensures updates appear immediately instead of waiting for the nightly sync.

If items still do not appear as expected, reviewing the catalog from a mobile ordering perspective can help. Square catalogs that work well for in-store POS sometimes need small adjustments to feel intuitive in a mobile app.
