If your Square data is not appearing correctly in Layout, the issue is almost always related to how data is configured in Square or when the last sync occurred. Because Layout mirrors Square directly, Square acts as the single source of truth for your catalog, locations, modifiers, and availability.
Layout automatically runs a full Square sync once per day at 11:59 PM. If you’ve made changes in Square and don’t see them reflected in the app yet, the first step is to trigger a manual sync from the Layout dashboard. Manual sync options are available anywhere Square-backed data is displayed, such as locations or catalog-related pages. In most cases, a manual sync resolves the issue immediately.
If a manual sync does not fix the problem, review the data in Square itself. Items that are missing from the app are often not assigned to a category, marked as unavailable, or not enabled for the correct location in Square. Layout will not display items that Square considers inactive or improperly configured.
Modifiers and variations are another common source of confusion. If a modifier does not appear in the app, confirm that it is attached to the correct item in Square and that it is enabled for online ordering. Modifiers that exist in Square but are not linked to items will not show up in Layout.
Location issues can also affect syncing. If a location does not appear in Layout, verify that it is active in Square and that it has been enabled inside the Layout dashboard. New locations added in Square will not appear in the app until they are synced and explicitly activated.
In some cases, syncing issues may be caused by permission changes. If Square permissions were revoked or modified, Layout may lose access to certain data. Reconnecting Square through the dashboard restores permissions and typically resolves access-related issues.
It’s also important to consider timing. Large catalog updates may take a short amount of time to process after syncing, especially for multi-location businesses with many items and modifiers.
If data still looks incorrect after verifying Square configuration and triggering a manual sync, it’s likely a deeper catalog structure issue. Reviewing category organization, modifier logic, and variation setup in Square usually reveals the cause.
